The MLB season did not even get a chance to begin as the country shutdown in mid-March just before the season was scheduled to start. Is baseball coming back in 2020? However, it seems fortunes have changed and after months of preparation and deliberation the 2020 MLB season is starting on the 23rd of July. The first two games launching the 2020 MLB season will be on Thursday the 23rd of July. Playing in the inaugural games will be the Washington Nationals against New York Yankees. While the Los Angeles Dodgers will play the San Francisco Giants.

This season will consist of 60 games, and teams will be limited to playing teams in their regions. That is, AL Central teams will only play teams in the central division of the American League and national League.

However, this will be a very different season not just because it’s one of the shortest and likely to have the fewest spectators but many of the big names will not be participating. Notably, some players have chosen to be precautionary and has stayed home to keep safe from the Covid-19 pandemic. While other players have already tested positive and therefore will be missing out on the season. Players who have tested positive include Freddie Freeman, Miguel Sanó, Joey Gallo and Salvador Perez.

The first player to categorically say no to the 2020 MLB season was Arizona diamondbacks player Mike Leake. There have been several other players from different teams who have since dropped out. Names such as David Price of the Los Angeles Dodgers buster Posey are from the San Francisco giants as well as Joe Ross from the Washington nationals to name a few.

Granted fans will be disappointed, however we are excited to see what this new format of playing will yield. May be now that some of the veterans and All Star players are either opting out or have tested positive; it may give players who were previously overlooked a chance to shine.
