Still, Panama’s goalkeeper, Orlando Mosquera, made exceptional saves to keep the score level at halftime.
Mexico gradually took control of the game in the second half, though breaking the deadlock proved challenging. By the 60th minute, El Tri began dominating the proceedings and had a near-scoring opportunity with Uriel Antuna’s header, which Mosquera saved. Amidst Mexico’s offensive pressure, an unusual incident occurred in the 63rd minute when referee Hector Martinez initially issued a second yellow card to Panama’s Harold Cummings for a perceived foul on Orbelín Pineda. However, Martinez reversed the decision shortly after, and the match resumed.
The breakthrough moment for Mexico arrived in the 88th minute, courtesy of Giménez. Pineda delivered a well-placed pass to the 22-year-old, who swiftly maneuvered into the center of the box and scored past Mosquera. Although Mexico faced a nervy ending, conceding a late freekick in stoppage time, they managed to clear the subsequent shot and secure the victory.
