Big 6 and Big 8 Craps Bets

Big 6 & 8 Bets

The big 6 and big 8 bets are found in the game of craps and are seen on both ends of the craps table. It is located close to the pass line section on the table, right where the table makes a 90-degree angle. Big 6 and big 8 are clearly printed on the table, which makes it easy to spot. These bets are about betting on whether you think the dice will roll a big 6 or a big 8 before a 7 is rolled. When you make this bet, the dealer rolls the dice until either come up. If they do, you win, but if a 7 is rolled before a 6 or 8 is rolled, you lose. This is a standalone bet in online craps because apart from 7, 6, and 8 are the most frequent outcomes.

You can choose to bet on a big 6, which assumes that a 6 will be rolled before a 7. Or, you can choose to bet on a big 8, which assumes that an 8 will be rolled before the 7. You wager on each separately; it is not a combined bet. The big 6 and big 8 bets are also considered to be risky bets because they payout differently. The chances of losing money here are greater than the odds of you winning any money. Another notable aspect of these bets is that they are self-service. This means that you do not need help from the dealer to place your chips in this area. You can do this yourself.

Big 6 and Big 8 Payouts

We’ve mentioned that the payout values for these two bets differ from the values for all other games. Big 6 and big 8 bets both pay at a ratio of 1:1 or even money. The minimum bet that you can place here has to meet the overall table minimum. Similarly, the maximum bet you can place has to meet the overall table maximum.

Why You Should Avoid Making This Bet

So, what exactly makes big 6 and big 8 bets so risky? And, why should you try to avoid making this bet in a craps game? Essentially both bets involve betting against the number 7. And, we’ve explained how the bet works above. The important bit of information is that it pays 1:1. This means that if you bet $10 assuming that the number 6 will roll before the number 7, you receive $10 in winnings. Many players don’t see this as a fair enough trade because if you do the math, there are six possible ways in which you can roll a 7, but only five possible ways in which you can roll a 6. Which means that there are more ways for you to lose than win.

However, if you play a normal 6 or 8 on the craps table, you’re at better odds. Normal 6’s and 8’s have a payout ratio of 7:6. This means that if you bet $6 on either of those regular numbers, you’ll receive a payout of $7. This is not much, but it is $1 more than what you would’ve received if you wagered on a big 6 and a big 8.

House Edge in Craps

In a regular craps game, the house edge stands at a modest 1.5. But this increases dramatically when you make a big 6 or big 8 craps bet, reaching a high of 9%. This gives the house a massive advantage over you and can see you lose tons of money if the outcome is not what you have hoped. This is another reason why this bet is best avoided.
