Gambling in Alabama

While the gaming activities in Alabama have been around for a while, certain gambling games are prohibited. The legislation only allows pari-mutuel live greyhound and horse racing. All of the casinos in Alabama abide by this law, and merely offer charitable bingo games. By definitions, these electronic bingo games present themselves as slot machines but the gameplay is different. The payout is generated from a pool in which the outcome of the spin is derived from the pool.

The gambling activities that do take place in the state are authorized and need to be issued proper licensing. Charitable gambling is allowed in Alabama, however, not anyone can host a game. You would need to be issued a license to host the games. The conditions of the license also dictate the period of days you can have the games, the wagering limit of games and the type of gambling that will take place. Other conditions you need to consider are the following

  • Alabama Gambling Age – in order to gain entry into the casino and play games, you need to be 21 years of age.
  • Alabama Gambling Bill – the State Constitution in 1901 banished all Class III casino gambling. These include slot machines and traditional table games, such as roulette and blackjack.
  • The Alabama State Lottery – Alabama is one of a few US states that don’t sell lottery tickets. Despite being a cash cow for most states, they remain banned in the region. To buy lotto tickets, players have to go to Florida, Georgia, or Tennessee to purchase them.

History of Alabama Gambling

In the history of Alabama, gambling has always been a contentious subject. As of the few conservative states in America, they remain apprehensive about legalizing any type of gambling in the region. The laws that prohibit gambling in the state do not extend to tribal land where Tribal Alabama casinos remain rooted. In the past, the government of Alabama filed a lawsuit against the Poarch Band for the operation of Class III machines. However, the suit was dismissed on the grounds that Alabama had no authority to regulate the Tribal Gaming.

The State legislature formed the Alabama Racing Commission in 1971. There were responsible for overseeing the regulating and licensing of gambling in Alabama. They instituted local voting on gaming matters that saw four tracks reduced to two. The approval of bingo games required similar referendum from counties in the state, as stated in the charitable gambling law enacted in 1993.
