Quick History of New Jersey Gambling

Horse racing was the first form of gambling to be legalized in New Jersey, which happened in the 1830s. It only became regulated in 1939. The first racetrack to be established in New Jersey was the Freehold Raceway racetrack. It is still fully operational today.

The state lottery launched in 1970, and scratch off tickets were made available about a year later. The New Jersey lottery was the first of its kind to allow players to select their own numbers. Before this, you could only play quick pick numbers.

The movement to legalize gambling in Atlantic City began in the 1970s. A constitutional referendum was passed in 1976. The referendum allowed Atlantic City casinos to offer Las Vegas-style casino games. No other regions were allowed to offer these types of casino games to its customers. The first official licensed casino only opened in 1978 and is still operational today.
