North Dakota Gambling History

In 2002 North Dakota gambling suffered a scandal when an off-track betting operator was charged for money laundering. The operator had supposedly taken $99 million worth of bets. The off-track betting facility was not allowed to collect bets on horses off-track; this was an exclusive privilege of charity organizations.

Gambling for charity was permitted in 1977, and it became the first type of legal gambling in North Dakota. The charity organizations first started with offering bingo and raffle games. The casino games provided by charity organizations expanded to blackjack and off-track betting.

In the beginning, there were four race tracks in North Dakota. But these days, you will find one race track that operates live horseracing. If you want to do live horseracing, you will find it at Chippewa Downs. In 1992 the state went on to legalize North Dakota casinos.
