Oregon Gaming History

Gaming in Oregon started in the 1900s worth pari-mutuel betting on horses. The gambling form was legalized in 1931.  Following horse race betting legalization,  law makers allowed residents to take part in social games; however, under state laws, players were prohibited from winning monetary prizes. The state lottery entered the gambling scene in the same century, with the first ticket being sold in 1984.

The first casino to be opened in Oregon was a casino-bingo hall owned by the Cow Creek Band on Umpqua Indians in 1992.  In 2004 the last greyhound track was closed downed, and three later lawmakers legalized commercial poker clubs. After an entire decade of stagnant gambling, sports betting is allowed in the state.

Sports betting in Oregon goes further than the 2000s. In 1989, the state lottery launched Sports Action, which was an NFL and NBA parlay card system. Due to an appeal by the state legislature, the NFL parlay was discounted, and the NBA cards didn’t last long as the NBA filed a lawsuit in which the lottery settled.
