UFC Betting Lines

Fight fans have a number of lines available to them at online sportsbooks. Some of the most popular UFC betting markets at sports betting sites include:

Moneyline Bet

When most people think of wagering on sports, they think of moneyline bets. With these bets, you pick fight winners. Now, this can be very difficult to do at times, which usually leads to better odds. And, other times, bets can be pretty predictable, so the odds on moneylines won’t be great.

Due to the nature of MMA, point spread bets aren’t really possible, so if a moneyline isn’t giving you the odds you are looking for, you need to look at other bets.

Method of Victory

A method of victory bet focuses on predicting how the fight will end. Options aren’t limited to knockout, submission or decision. You can also bet on a technical knockout, disqualification, or corner stoppage.

We caution you to be careful with these bets as predicting how a match is going to end is very difficult, even if the world’s most famous grappler is involved. Also, don’t get confused with the knockout and technical knockout options as these have two different meanings.

Here is a quick explanation of all possible outcomes in a UFC match:

  • Knockout – when a fighter is rendered unconscious by a legal strike from the opponent and is unable to continue with the match.
  • Technical Knockout – when a referee deems that a fighter won’t be able to continue the match.
  • Submission – forcing an opponent to submit with a grappling maneuver. A fighter signals a submission by tapping the ground.
  • Corner Stoppage – also known as ‘throwing in the towel’, this occurs when a fighter’s team believes the fighter cannot continue with the match.
  • Decision – when the outcome of the match rests with the three judges who have been scoring each round of the fight.

Fight Will Go The Distance

With this bet, you are wagering on whether the fight will last five rounds. If it does, the result will be by decision. You don’t have to place a bet on who will win the fight in this one but you can bet on the type of decision if it does go this distance. So, you can bet the result will be decided by a unanimous, split, or majority decision.

Round Betting

Round betting is similar to betting on whether the fight will go the distance. However, instead of saying that the match is going to last its full length, you predict that the fight will end in a specific round.

So, let’s say that there is match between Amanda Nunes and Rhonda Rousey, you can predict that the fight will end in the second round. If it does, you win the bet.

Total Rounds Betting

This is an over/under for MMA sports. You predict whether the number of rounds the match features will exceed or come under the prediction made by the sportsbook. Sometimes, these lines can seem a little confusing, so we’ll try to explain the difference.

At a sportsbook, a totals line will be displayed as follows:

OV 2.5+ -200

UN 2.5- +160

Now, betting over means that you think that the match will go on for more than two rounds. However, betting under means that you think that it will last less than three.

Propositional Bets

Propositional bets (also known as a prop bet) is a bet made on an event to take place during the match. It doesn’t matter who wins the match as long as this event happens. So, for example, you can bet on one of the fighters to throw more jabs, or for a specific grapple move to be used at some point. As long as it happens, you are getting paid.

Technically, method of victory bet is actually a prop bet but it’s such a popular bet, it warrants its own section.

Usually, a UFC match lasts a maximum of three to five rounds. Each round lasts for five minutes. The importance of the fight is what determines the number of rounds. For instance, a title match in UFC will have five rounds, while a match which is not as important will only have three rounds.

Moreover, there are fighting rules associated with UFC fights. The United Rules of Mixed Martial Arts regulates things like weight categories, ring attire and fighting styles. Moves that are not allowed in the ring include hair pulling, head-butting and kicking, eye gouging, spine strikes, and biting, among others.

UFC Betting Odds Explained

So, we find that a lot of people get put off of sports betting because they are clueless when it comes to reading odds. Well, if you are one such person, we are here to tell you that while reading odds may seem scary, it is actually really simple.

Firstly, we must mention that there are three types of odds systems: Fractional, Decimal and Moneyline/American odds. As most of the sportsbooks featured on our site use American, we’ll focus on explaining this format here, but if you want to read about the others, we do have a dedicated odds guide.

So, back to American odds on a UFC fight. When you visit a sportsbook, you will come across many lines that look like this:

Mark De La Rosa  +137

Jordan Espinosa    -157

What you really want to pay attention to in this line is the symbol next to the number. A plus denotes the underdog and a minus marks the favorite. You can use the following formulas to calculate how much you could potentially win on a specific bet:

  • Positive – Odds x (Stake/100)
  • Negative – (100/Odds) x Stake

Top UFC Betting Tips

Every MMA bettor should be working towards crafting the best UFC betting strategy possible. While we can’t say that we get every prediction right, here are some tips we know work in helping make better selections.

Focus on Fighter’s Combat Style

MMA combines a variety of fighting styles – boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate, and Jiu-Jitsu. The styles and techniques vary from fighter to fighter. So, it is wise to study the styles of each fighter prefers using.

In addition, it is also good to see what type of style fighters struggle against. For example, if you see Merab Dvalishvili struggles against grapplers, and his next fight is against Ray Borg, betting against Dvalishvili may be the wise option.

Join a UFC Betting Forum

So, sometimes getting an opinion from other bettors may be kind of helpful in crafting better decisions. We are not saying that you should go with their suggestions, but understanding their line of thinking can sometimes make you more sure of your own bet or open you up to ideas you had never thought of before.

We recommend having a look at the UFC betting Reddit thread. There is a load of experienced better there that often share their bet slips. You can also have a look at UFC betting trends at sportsbooks and sports betting guides. These give you realtime action of what is going on.

Consider Taking the Underdog

Remember very little separates fighters in the UFC. The seventh ranked fighter could easily knockout the champion if given the chance to fight him or her. So, you should sometimes consider taking the underdog.

You stand a chance of make more money this way. Just remember to take calculated risks or you may land up in a situation where the underdog you bet on to win is knocked out in seconds.
ufc live betting

UFC Live Betting

Live betting opens up a whole new world of opportunities to bettors as you place wagers on the match as it is taking place. Odds are adjusted according to what is taking place in the moment. So, you get a few chances to make a lot of money in a short space of time.

For example, you could be watching a match where it seems that Conor McGregor is going to submit against Eddie Alvarez but then he brings it back with his boxing game. Betting on McGregor on the way to submission is going to give you a much bigger payout then what you could have potentially gotten before the match.

It is important to note that while live betting is fun, you need to practice responsible gambling while doing so. It is so easy to get caught up in it all that you start wagering more than you would like to at times.

What You’ll Find In Our Fantasy UFC Guide

How to Play Fantasy MMA Games

Although players will find that most UFC fantasy leagues deviate when it comes to scoring systems, they all tend to focus on the same areas of the sport. One sports betting site may just, for example, award more points for a takedown than another.

In general, when you join a fantasy league, you will be given a salary with which to buy players – in this case, UFC fighters. It is always important to remember that you can spend less money than you have available but you can never go over the provided salary cap. Depending on the league, you will be required to buy a set number of fighters to fill up your squad. (For example, at DraftKings, the number is usually set at five.)

These fighters will earn and lose points for performing specific actions in real-life matches. Below we have listed the actions that most fantasy leagues focus on:

  • Significant Strikes
  • Takedowns
  • Advances
  • Knockdowns
  • Reversals
  • Win
  • Round Win
  • Decision Win

Players need to focus on picking fighters who will be able to rack up the most possible points. Often, this does not only mean picking fighters that will win their bouts but also choosing those who are able to garner extra points through performing particular combat maneuvers throughout the match-up.

The player who is able to collect the most points with their team over the course of an event will win the prize associated with the league that they are playing in.

UFC Fantasy Draft Tips

Many US bettors are on the lookout for some solid UFC fantasy advice to get the edge over their opponents in online matchups. While we can’t guarantee that the advice we provide will get you wins, it will definitely make you think more strategically during an MMA fantasy draft. So, have a look, and start building better UFC fantasy teams now.

  • Study Matchups Before Making Daily Fantasy MMA Picks – make sure to study all the matchups before making your picks. You may be lucky enough to find a cheap underdog you have a pretty good feeling is going to win. By diversifying, you get to keep a mixture of strong expensive and inexpensive fighters in your team.
  • Study Fighters Past Performances – it is important to have a look at which fighters are good at scoring points. For example, Conor McGregor may have a good overall record, but his fighting style may not generate all that many points. In such cases, even though he probably will win an upcoming match-up, he may not be the best option for a UFC fantasy pick em game.
  • Don’t Feel Forced To Reach Your Salary Cap – in many fantasy sports, not using your entire salary cap is basically a way to guarantee that you don’t win. However, this is really not the case for fantasy MMA picks. Ultimately, all you want to do is build a roster filled with fighters that score points. If you have some salary cap left over after you have built your desired squad, don’t feel the need to spend it on fighters that may even lose you points.
