Casinos in West Virginia have been operating for a long-time, which may come as a surprise to some people. Generally, southern states have stricter gambling laws, but not West Virginia. There are five land-based casinos and online sports betting options that were recently launched.
For some time, West Virginia casinos actually raked in the money as residents from neighboring states, such as Virginia and Kentucky, had to use them to get their gambling fix. However, nowadays, most states are relaxing the laws surrounding gambling, which has led to a small decline in income.
This has led some officials to consider an interstate online casino network to stop residents traveling out of state to gamble. But the truth is, you can already gamble online in West Virginia. We explain how below!

Gambling Laws in West Virginia
Life is pretty easy if you are an avid gambler in West Virginia. Practically everything is legal, including casino gaming, sports betting, pari-mutuel betting, daily fantasy sports, and the lottery.
West Virginia was always known as one of the southern states with more favorable gambling laws, but in recent years, they have really taken it to a new level. Most forms of online gambling are now legal, which isn’t the case in most gambling-friendly states.
Currently, there are five land-based casinos, four online sportsbooks, and four online casinos. The state has made provisions for 11 more online casinos, which you will legally access throughout the state.
Online Gambling in West Virginia
Online gambling is explicitly legal in West Virginia. The state started with sports betting sites launching in 2019, soon after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was struck down.
Initially, only two sportsbooks were launched: DraftKings and FanDuel. But more were added later – BetMGM is another popular option that is now available.
In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for a shutdown, the state launched an interstate online casino network. It took 42 days for the bill to be passed, which is unheard of in the political scene.
The state can now issue interim online casino licenses to applicants, which need to be partnered with one of the land-based casinos in the state. Currently, there are four online casinos:
- DraftKings Casino
- BetMGM Casino
- BetRivers Casino
- William Hill Casino
These online casinos offer tons of games from notable providers, including slots, table games (blackjack, roulette, craps, etc.), and video poker.
If you can’t find a game you want to play, you can try visiting an offshore site, which may offer games that take your fancy.
Land-Based Casinos in West Virginia
West Virginia has five land-based casinos. Most of these casinos are located on one side of the state, making them difficult to visit for some residents. That is partly why the state launched an interstate online casino network with casinos needing to partner with land-based casinos.
It’s still fun to visit a real casino now and again, though. Here is a list of the land-based casinos in West Virginia:
