Washington Nationals vs New York Mets Predictions, Picks & Odds 8/5/20

The MLB action continues tonight with a big National League East division clash with the Washington Nationals vs New York Mets. Both teams enter this game with questionable records, but the Nationals have already been lucky enough to nab a 5-3 win over the Mets in the first game the series.

They come into this game with a record of 4-4, which is not exactly what you would expect from last year’s World Series champions. However, they still have a pretty good chance of taking their division given that they have played fewer games than the Braves and more games than the Marlins.

The Mets aren’t really having a good season. They’ve lost a few players this season due to injuries and others opting out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their overall record shows these issues as they’ve lost twice as many games as they’ve won. So, the prediction in this one looks easy, but do the stats say the same?

Washington Nationals vs New York Mets Predictions

Nationals

  • Nationals ace Max Scherzer will be starting on the mound today. He has only played one other game this season, and it was against the Yankees. Although it ended in a loss, Scherzer still posted an ERA of 2.84 and 21 strikeouts. His record against the Mets is 10-5 with an ERA of 2.63.
  • On the Nationals offensive side, Josh Harrison,Howie Kendrick and Starlin Castro have been performing well. Juan Soto still appears to be left out of the team for now despite having recovered from COVID19.
  • The Nationals enter this game with a 4-4 record. They won their last game against the Mets; however, they haven’t been playing the best this season. They recorded some pretty significant losses to the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. The series with those two teams seemed to go a bit back and forth.

Mets

  • The Mets will be starting Rick Porcello on the mound today. Porcello puts up some great performances over his career, but he isn’t that consistent. He enters this one with a record of 0-1 this season and ERA of 13.50. Overall, he hasn’t been the player the Mets hoped he would be when they signed him earlier this year.
  • Offensively, the Mets have been able to rack up some points even if they land up losing a game. Players to watch out for in this one includes Andres Gimenez, Wilson Ramos and Brian Dozier.
  • The Mets enter this game with a record of 4-8. They already lost against the Nationals without Scherzer playing. They have also been letting up massive scores against opposing teams this whole season, so this does not bode well for the team.

Our Prediction

We think that the Washington Nationals are going to take this one. The Mets aren’t playing very well, and the Nationals are playing their best pitcher. It would be stupid to bet against them.

However, the moneyline isn’t going to make you too much cash in this one. So, we say that take either the -1.5 run line on the Nationals or the Over 8.5 line for a pretty modest return.
