Blackjack Winning Odds for Tricky Hands

Some blackjack hands are difficult to win because the odds between the dealer and the player are close. If the dealer has an up-card, this can be a very useful device, but it will create a tough situation.

Below we will break down some of the more complex hand combinations in blackjack hand and the dealer’s upcard. Then we’ll explain how the blackjack odds of these particular hands can help increase your chances of winning.

Hard 16

A hard 16 is a blackjack hand that splits many players. Some say you should stand, while others say you should hit. If you have a basic blackjack strategy, you can hit if the dealer has a 7 or an 8. However, you should consider surrendering if 9 or 10 shows.

Remember that the chances of going bust are very high.  But the odds are lower than the dealer ending up with a 17 or more.

12 Vs. Dealer’s 4

This hand is one of the closest in blackjack regarding odds. And many players don’t like this hand because it’s not a good position to be in. If the dealer has a four as an upcard, then there is a 40% chance that you will go bust. This means you will lose the hand 60% of the time if you choose to stand. However, if you choose to hit, there’s a 58% chance of losing.  And only a 2% chance of a push. So,  we advise that you stand and wait for the dealer to go bust, even if you have an advantage.

15 vs. Dealer’s 10

Many players dislike this hand because it is the least favorable in blackjack. On this hand, it doesn’t matter what you do because the dealer has a higher chance of winning than you. So, if you hit, you will have a 22% chance of winning. While standing will give you a 23% chance of winning.  The best way to handle this hand is to risk it and hit.
