A somber cloud hangs over the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department following the death of Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello at Batavia Downs Casino. Sanfratello succumbed to complications arising from an altercation while on special assignment at the Batavia Downs Casino early Sunday morning.

A Night of Intervention Turns Deadly at Batavia Downs

Just before 1:00 am on March 10th, Sergeant Sanfratello responded to a reported verbal confrontation within the casino. Working alongside Batavia Downs security, he attempted to de-escalate the situation and remove two patrons, Lyndsey Jean Wilcox and Michael J. Elmore, from the premises.

Unfortunately, the situation intensified. Wilcox allegedly became belligerent and physically resisted Sergeant Sanfratello’s efforts. Elmore then intervened, and both individuals reportedly attacked the officer. During the ensuing struggle, Sanfratello deployed a taser on Elmore but tragically became unresponsive and died at the scene. CPR efforts were unsuccessful.

The cause of death remains under investigation. It’s unclear if Sergeant Sanfratello suffered a heart attack or other medical emergency due to the exertion of the fight, or if injuries inflicted by the suspects contributed to his passing.

A Community Mourns a Hero

Sergeant Sanfratello dedicated 32 years to serving and protecting his community. He began his career with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher in 1992, rising through the ranks to Deputy Sheriff and ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant in 2007.

“Sergeant Sanfratello’s unwavering commitment to public safety will be deeply missed,” said the Sheriff’s Department Spokesperson, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Investigation Underway

The City of Batavia Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Wilcox and Elmore face a range of felony charges, including first-degree manslaughter, aggravated assault on a police officer, and burglary for Elmore, and attempted assault and burglary for Wilcox. Both are currently detained in the Genesee County Jail and are scheduled for arraignment on March 12th.

As the investigation progresses, further details surrounding this tragic event are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
